D300S Bulb

Question

Hi, I recently got a D300S. I see the shoestring usb is $75 which is a bit too much for me.

I have a question regarding using the camera with a MC-36A remote.

If I hook up the camera using USB, can I set-up the capture using the MC-36A remote (amount of images, time, etc.) and then it'll capture the images to backyardnikon without having to use the shoestring usb setup?

Thanks

The short answer is no.

The problem is that unless BYN is sending the "take picture" command to the camera it has no idea when to ask for the image to be downloaded. If the MC-36A interval time is controlling the camera BYN is not in control.

The other thing that I will say that you only need the DSUSB cable if you want to shoot BULB exposures. If you are shooting camera-timed exposures less than 30 seconds in length then the DSUSB cable is not needed.

I would plan to trade up to a newer camera or purchase the DSUSB cable.

So if I set the settings to BULB using backyardnikon and then use the MC-36A to also match those settings and start the shutter at the same time from both sources, it wouldn't work?

It was just a theory because I thought the MC-36A doesn't interfere with USB mode but I don't have the remote so I can't try it out. Remote is $11 shipped on ebay.

I understand it's only if I want above 30".

I actually had a D800 before lol. I sold all my equipment. This D300S was a gift so I thought i'd give it a shot.

I guess I could use backyardnikon to set up the frame and everything, then use the MC-36A to shoot directly to the camera? Live view should work fine without the serial usb setup correct? I can use Nikon Camera Control currently for live view.

Thanks
