BYE is bugging when off wifi

3kids5cats

Question

Too my PC outback tonight to shoot some images of Mars. I was out of WiFi range and the program just sits on LOADING...... Do I have to have a network connection for this too work? I waited like 3 minutes and the app finally loaded but it kept crashing.. Took my PC back inside with camera, wifi abundent... no issues. This sound like a really dumb idea if the program wont work because it cant call home?

Any thoughts?

By design, the Trial license requires an active Internet connection to verify your license. This is because it became known to the authors that there were those who were cheating the BYE license by settiing their PC system time back to continue to use BYE for free. If you want to start BYE in an area without an Internet connection, you will need a permanent license (Classic or Premium).

You could start BYE in the house before carrying the laptop out to the scope. I have never tried it, but it may work.

The works well has been like this for many years... if this was buggy as you said thousands of users would have said the same thing... but they have not.

Yes, trials will call home each time... purchases do not.

I suspect your wifi is just strong enough to ping but so week that you get many packet lost and this has bye continuing the process until it it gets a response from the server.

Kept crashing... what is the error message you get?

I have a premium license, not a trial. I have been licensed since 2015. I can shoot a video and show you and post it. If I can't post here, I can put on you tube of Facebook. It down what I said. I can't start it on the house and take outside, but really, that's not a solution. I bought the software, should not be subjected to a constant check.

If your copy of BYE is registered with a paid license then it does not need an Internet connection to operate. So whatever your "Loading..." issue is, it is NOT related to BYE needing an Internet connection. It may however be related to some other application on your PC behaving unusually due to the lack of Internet connection.

Please understand that there are thousands of BYE and BYN users. Many of whom use the software at dark sky sites where there is no internet. They do not have a problem, so the conclusion is that your issue has a different cause.

You can test by temporarily disabling WiFi on your PC when it is in the house.

There is no need to post any video to prove your license. The authors can check their database. In any case you should never post your license key publicly!!!

It is always important to post which version of BYE are you running. The latest release is BYE 3.1.16, but there is also a stable pre-release version (3.1.17 RC2) available for download. If your version of BYE is older then you should upgrade to at least 3.1.16.

You say that you are a veteran user. In the past, has BYE had an issue operating without a WiFi connection? What changed?

I am using the 3.1.17 RC2 version. . Its not because of any other application. I have been a application developer for over 30 years. Do I have to reverse engineer you app and point to the specific code????

I wont record my lic # but I will create a video showing exactly what it does.. since I am so hard to believe. I really dont appreciate the attitude. There is a problem, maybe i hit on the right variable to make it occur, i dont know. Just because others have not had the same issue or reported it does not mean you make the assumption that its not you, its me.. Hell, why didn't you just tell me to do the three finger salute and reboot.

This is not tech support, this is armature hour. Thanks, but I will fix it on my own then. If I do, and I find it is a problem others could run into, I will make sure to post it so they wont get the same treatment I did. NO HELP!!!

Sorry if my replies hit a nerve. That was not my intent. I was merely trying to be helpful. I did not say that I do not believe that you are having an issue with BYE, but only that I did not believe that it was caused by BYE's not having an Internet connection.

I really only suggested starting BYE in the house and taking it to your scope because based on my long experience with BYE, only the Trial license requires an internet connection and you did not say that you had a paid license. With your low post count on this site I took a chance that you were a new user with a Trial license.

I just want to say that I am not affiliated with O'Telescope in any way, except as a long time user and supporter of BYE. So in that sense I am an amateur as opposed as a BYE developer. However, I am a retired Chemical Engineer and software developer and I have been writing software professionally since 1976. I also successfully tested my copy of BYE 3.1.17 RC2 Premium and my T5i with no an Internet connection before replying to you. So perhaps not so much of an amateur after all. With the information that you provided, there was not much more that I could do to try to duplicate your issue.

Over the past several years, I have successfully helped hundreds of BYE and BYN users solve their issues. I am sorry that I was unable to help you.

Good luck with your issue, and your attitude!

Play nice guys.

Purchase keys do not require Internet and do not call home at each startup like trials do... so your initial assumption that wifi is/could be the culprit is not likely.

Send me the log file and I'll take a look.

Nope. I installed on a brand new windows 10 machine, and it did the same thing. I put it on a windows 8 machine and it works, so obviously something with Windows 10 and this app.

It's not immediate, on the splash screen when it boots up, it never shows the license number like it does when it works. If you wait long enough the interface will load, but the whole system crashes when you.connect to the camera.

I just gave up. Astrophotography is frustrating enough by itself.

Based on the issues that others have reported with Windows 10, and if you want to continue to troubleshoot, I would look at folder permissions. If BYE used the registry, which it doesn't, I would also suggest looking at registry permissions. A while ago I created a post in the Suggestion Box Forum for BYE to check the permissions of the folders that it uses and report any issues during startup.

Here is the post -->

I run Windows  7 in demigod mode. I have my own login, but it is in the Administrators group. Still UAC wants confirmation for some apps (not BYE).

Attached is a log file that shows a successful initialization. If you look at your log file you may get some useful information from what it was doing when it hung and what should happen next.

I'd like to see te log file when occurs.  I mean that it eventually load but crashes when the camera connects.
