Canon 6D MkII Stuck "Busy"

Cozza

Question

Hello,

I've been trying to get Backyard EOS Working with my Canon 6D MkII. BYE counts down then keeps getting stuck at "busy" after the shot is taken. Abort does not work and I have to pull the USB cable to regain control.

  • I've attempted to use BYE 3.1.16, & 3.1.17 RC2.
  • Mirror lock is turned off.
  • Have attempted to use 3 USB Cables including 1 brand new one
  • Have tried reinstalling
  • Am using a Surface Pro (2017)  with no USB Hub.
  • Firmware 1.0.3
  • EOS Utility is not having any issues taking shots

I've run out of ideas :(

Any news regarding this issue? I don't have any issues setting EOS Utility to Card-Only.

I've been able to do several nights with BYE set to PC Only so this certainly appears to be the issue.

If BYE is able to connect and communicate with your camera then the only issue that I can think of where re-installing (to a different folder) has fixed any issues is where Windows has set overly-restrictive permissions on folders that BYE access.

Do you have Long Exposure Noise Reduction (LENR) turned n in the camera? If so then the camera will take a dark exposure after every light exposure. This doubles the amount of time before the image is available. You should turn LENR off.

I saw that you are saving both RAW and JPG images to the camera's memory card. I can also see that your BYE Download and TEMP folders are on your OneDrive. I would change the location to be a purely local folder. I know that there are issues when BackyardTEMP is on a non-local folder. According to previous statements by the authors, having the BackyardTEMP folder on a non-local driver is unsupported. This is because BYE requires prompt and reliable logging, so that folder MUST be local.

Thank you for the replies, it's much appreciated.

@astroman133 LENR is turned off. I had BYE pointing to a different folder before reinstalling but it didn't help. BYE is defaulting to that OneDrive folder but I have OneDrive disabled so for all intents and purposes it's a local folder. I changed it back to what I had before reinstalling anyway to cover that off.

@admin I changed it to PC Only and took 10 test shots without issue. I then changed it to PC + Camera, BYE took shot 1 of 10 then jumped to shot 4 of 10 then got stuck "busy". Whilst not a complete deal-breaker my preference is to store on the card only for a shorter break between shots (startrail photography) and I have more storage available on the camera than I do on the surface.
