Trial Extension and Black Soup

holly8282

Question

Hello. My trial of BYE expires on the 4th and I have yet to be able to focus using it and was wondering if I could get any extensions? For some reason when I have the camera connected all I get is a soupy black screen in live view. I know that it’s not that I’ve left the lens cap on or something to that nature because if I disconnect I can see stars in the live view in my camera. So any help in that area would also be great. Thanks so much!

Live View exposures are only a few milliseconds long so only the brightest stars will be visible. Changing the exposure setting does not alter the LiveView frame rate, but it does alter the brightness of the image. For focusing, set the exposure to 2 seconds and the ISO to your camera's maximum. Then point your telescope at the brightest start that you can find. If you are using a lens, then you should use Snap exposures for focusing.

I use a lens and using snap exposures is what I have been doing. I kept the iso as high as it would go and set the shutter speed at a variety of lengths up to 30 seconds (even tried bulb for experimentation sake) and never saw a star but if I disconnect, use the same settings, and use the live view zoom feature on my camera screen I can see the brightest star. It’s really odd and I almost feel like it’s some minuscule setting that’s wrong.

I'm stumped!

I see it when I am in live view in BYE on the frame and focus tab. If I disconnect or switch over to the lcd screen on camera I can usually find a bright star, but in BYE I basically just see black noise (almost as if the lens cap is on but I assure you it's not). I have adjusted ISO and exposure times 1000 different ways. If I take a snap, my snap looks fine and not like the black soupy noise that I see in liveview on BYE. So here's the kicker...tested it during the day time and it works fine. I'm really starting to feel like an idiot so next time I make it out (maybe tonight) i will take some snaps with my cell phone or screen shots from the computer to share. Focusing is one of the biggest components of the software that I am interested in so I really hope I can get this figured out.

I have a canon t5i and use a Canon 75-300mm EF Zoom lens (no telescope)

Windows 10 Home, 64 bit, version 1709

I have the trial version of BYE that I downloaded for my extended trial last night. I have already uinstalled the first trial version I had.

Is the camera dial set to "M"?

Just some info. "Trial" is not the version. It is the license type. The version is 3.1.16, for example. The version defines the capabilities (and possibly bugs) of the software. The license defines which of those capabilities are available. For a Trial license, all the capabilities are available for a period of 30 days.

With using LiveView, both the exposure and the ISO act to brighten the image. This also brightens any noise. I expect that this leads to your "black soup" description.

I have never heard of BYE not showing data as what you see on the LCD screen.

Thanks for the correction about the correct terminology. My bad.

I will definitely go out long enough tonight to take pictures so you can see what I’m seeing.
