BYE 3.1.6 Will not connect Canon 40D

tsh4377

Question

I have loaded the EOS utilities and they work fine with the camera. I can control the camera with EOS utilities. So the USB is good. That should mean the drivers are installed correctly also I would think. I tried two cables just in case. Both do the same thing.

Log

21:35:35  Attempting to connect camera...
21:35:35  Canon drivers 'Canon215\' initialized.
21:35:35  Camera Not Found!  Make sure it's connected to the PC and turned ON :)

I have reinstalled the software twice. It is on Windows 10 PC. The strange thing is when I originally installed this software it said it could not find the log folder and I also had some other folders missing. I have manually added the folders and I do not get those errors now. Only the issue of the camera not connecting. I also have a new Canon Rebel SL2 which I tried. It does recognize this camera but says it is not supported.

Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Once I set a new install folder it installed correctly and worked. So I have some kind of weird permission problem going on with this PC. I have logs also. I will email them so you can have a look.

Thanks for your help.

First, 3.1.6 is pretty old. If you mistyped and have 3.1.16 then the software should be good and does support your camera. If you do have 3.1.6 then you should update to 3.1.16 or even 3.1.17 RC2 from the pre-release area.

Next, when you plug the camera to the computer and turn the camera on, does the camera show up in the Windows Device Manager?  If not, then BYE will not be able to connect. Consider that the USB cable could be bad.

If you have the Canon Software CD that came with the camera then you may benefit from installing the EOS Utility application. This may fix or install the low-level driver that Windows needs. If the EOS Utility is able to connect with the camera then BYE should.

Let us know how you make out.

looks like a bad install, the 40d is the most tested camera, this is what I used for development.

I think this  is a Windows security issue.

try reinstalling but this time install in a different folder.

Canon 40D is a commonly used but older Canon DSLR.

Make sure that you try the Older BYE Driver Set - "Canon 210".  While the 40D sports a Digic3 Processor which should connect with the "Canon2015" Driver Set, one cannot always be sure of which Firmware your specific 40D is running.

Thanks very much for the replies. Yeah I mistyped it is 3.1.16. Too late for me I guess. It is definitely something with the PC and a rights issue makes sense. I did install the EOS utility from the original Canon CD. It does work with the EOS utility so that rules out the cable. I have installed it on my desktop and another laptop I have procured for the purpose of astrophotography. I works fine on both.

I got a deal on the 40D so that's what I am starting out with. At this point I will not bother troubleshooting this problem until I get a lot of extra time since it is obviously a PC problem and I have found a PC that works.

Thanks for the help.

Well, not quite... if EOS Utility works then so should BYE... I use the exact same connection type to communicate with the camera.

Connect with EOS Utility again.... then close EOS Utility... then start BYE and try connecting your camera... send me that log file.

That is correct. I am retesting and I have nothing in the log folder at all. I am going to uninstall and reinstall one more time. I will email my results.

Thanks

Well.... this is technically not possible since BYE uses the same libraries.

... unless EOS utility is still connected to the camera somehow.

Or, BYE has a Windows permissions issue that the EOS Utility does not.

No log files? Either the OP is looking at the wrong folder, or BYE is failing at startup and not getting far enough in the startup process to create a log file, or BYE does not have permission to create files and write to the log folder.

I would assume that all of your installs/re-installs have been done to the same folder. I would suggest that your next install be to a different folder.
