Unable to connect the Camera D7100

mjartology

Question

Hi All,

I have downloaded the trial edition and was testing my camera. I am unable to connect my Nikon D7100. My camera is updated to Latest Firmware from Nikon.

I tired both 2015 option and the later option. Error message is same. I tried restarting the system as well and also turning on and off camera multiple times. Still No luck. I have attached the latest logfile for your reference.

Please, please, please tell us which version of BYN you are using.  Saying that you downloaded the "trial edition' is not sufficient.  A year from now when someone else is having problems connecting with a D7100, the exact version number will be useful.

The version of BYN is 1.0.x (we need all 3 numbers). 'Trial' is the license that you applied to the software. Other licenses are 'Classic' and 'Premium'.

When the camera is first plugged into the PC and powered on, Windows should recognize the camera and load the appropriate low-level driver. If this does not happen the BYN will not be able to connect. You should check the Windows Device Manager for confirmation. Let us know what you find.

Hi Rick, the version on BYN on my system is 2.0.9.

When the camera is first plugged into PC my windows recognizes the camera and I did checked in Windows Device Manager, it say the drivers and device is working properly and drivers are upto date.

Also, just if this information helps, I did download another software qslrdashboard and that detects and connects to my camera and i can take pictures and view live view too, but that is not as much powerful as BYN

I believe that qslrdashboard uses a different connection method from the Nikon SDK that BYN uses. At least, it appears that the camera is being correctly recognized by Windows.

I would try rebooting the PC and doing a factory reset on the camera. I would also be sure that the memory card in the camera is nearly empty. Then try connecting BYN again.

Not a Nikon owner, but I found these instructions, courtesy of Google:

To perform a reset you need to manually choose the reset option in the Shooting Menu and the Setup menu. To do this press 'Menu', select the Shooting Menu and scroll through the options until 'Reset Shooting Options' is highlighted, press ok, highlight 'Yes' and press ok again. Repeat this for the Setup menu.

Another option is to simultaneously press and hold the QUAL (image quality/size) button and the +/- Exposure Compensation button for 2 seconds.

I hope they help.

In order to use the link that Guylain provided you must have an account on the site.

So you did the reset. did it make any difference?

This comment may jog Guylain's memory....Sometimes BYN may fail to connect because the user does not have a required C++ run-time library installed on the PC. He knows which version of the RTL is needed and can hopefully provide a download link.

Yep, but this is not the case here as the actual Nikon/SDK (called module) have loaded properly according to the log file.

OK, so Windows is recognizing the camera because you see it in the Device Manager, but the Nikon SDK initializes successfully, but is not able to see or communicate with the camera.

I am at a loss for further suggestions. This is where not being a Nikon users puts me at a disadvantage.

Yes, exactly. windows does recognize and i see it in device manager. Another program also detects it and connects and i can take images and live view.

Its just BYN i am unable to connect by any means

Other software may not use the Nikon SDK.

Does the D7100 has a PTP / PC Communication menu option?  If yes try the different options.

its just has the USB connection which I am using.

As a menu option? It says USB?  Nothing like PTP?

I'm asking because I think the camera connected to the PC as a storage device and not an imaging device.  Where does it appear in Windows Manager?

Guylain suggested checking the camera's menus to see if there is are communications options settings. If so, the choice allows the camera to either be connected as a storage device or as a portable imaging device. You have not said whether this is the case or not. If PTP is a choice for communications mode, change to the other option. I would re-connect the camera after changing the mode try again to connect with BYN.

Again, I am not a Nikon owner, but there are several out there and I know that some of them have a D7100. Please chime in with any suggestions.

Thanks,

Hi thank you guess I missed Guylain's post. However I don't remember any such menu but I will surely check again today.

I have had issues with the D7100 as well.  The detection process for this application are not as robust as some of the other programs out there.  One thing to try is to take out the memory cards and see if that helps.  You should also try to use a newly charged battery as sometimes this is an issue as well.  If you have a can of compressed air or some other source, it doesn't hurt to blow out the usb terminals.  Some applications seem to be more susceptable  to usb connections that are sub-optimal.

I have taken to using  ac power adapters for my cameras to get away from the battery issues.

Hello,

I did all of those above, except for using ac power adapter, and still no luck.

Did you try another USB cable?

Did you try another PC?

Did you try with no USB hubs, the camera connected directly in a computer USB port?

Did you try another USB port on the computer?

Just trying to go about it by process of elimination.
