BYE and BYN need write access to directories where configuration files, temporary files, log files, image files, etc. are stored. Failure to be able to write/update these files can cause a variety of issues that all cause user frustration and a bad experience.
Users running Windows 10 are reporting BYE/BYN failures due to Windows updates, which they usually have no control over, have changed directory permissions to block BYE/BYN from writing to them.
It would be a benefit for users if BYE and BYN could test access to these directories at startup and either repair the permissions or report to the user which folders have incorrect permissions, and what the required permissions should be. In any case, the incorrect permissions should be logged.
Microsoft changes permissions and strategies for protecting system directories over time. This can cause application failures today that did not occur yesterday. Admittedly, this puts a burden on the application developer to adapt, but it is what it is.
