Can't Connect D5300

glspence

Question

Tried to connect the D5300 numerous times but the only message I'm now getting is "attempting to connect camera ...". This just hangs indefinitely and I need to run task manager in order to shut down program. Nothing else in program can be accessed for shutdown. All I see is the spinning blue circle.

The firmware on the D5300 is up to date with latest Nikon releases. I also tried to use both options of camera choice, I believe it was pre-2015 and post.

I did connect previously but the program would hang whenever it tried to execute a planned exposure sequence. I then reset the options so that the BYN would ask for the camera to use again. Now I can't get it to connect, whatever I do.

This is a c++ error.

It looks like you may have a c++ redistributable file that is corrupted on your pc.  BYN does not use c++ but the Nikon SDK does.

Please reinstall c++ 2010, 2012, and 2013... the x86 version.

Yes, when I connect usb Windows asks what I want to do with D5300.

I am running Windows Pro, if that matters.

I also tried to connect my D600. That camera connects fine. However when I try to preview or run an exposure sequence, BYN just gives me a "ding" and then hangs.

Which version of BYN? This is always an important part of your setup to provide when you ask for help.

Is the camera cabled to the PC with only a short USB cable that is known to be good? Have you tried a different short USB cable?

If the memory card in the computer has lots of images then BYN can take several minutes to connect. This is due to the design of the Nikon SDK that BYN uses. You can try removing the memory card or inserting an empty memory card when using BYN.

If you have updated the camera's firmware then it may be necessary for you to select a later version of the Nikon SDK to talk to the new firmware.

Just downloaded and using version 2.0.9.

The memory card was formatted so there's nothing on it. I also tried removing the card completely and starting up that way. I also turned the camera off, then on again, but same results.

I am using a short USB cable and it's the only one I've got. I do have a longer USB cable coming in tomorrow, because I thought I would be able to use this program. I did attach my D600, as mentioned, with a different cable and it too failed when I tried to execute a couple of planned (trial) exposures.

Because the D5300 does not connect and the D600 does connect to BYN 2.0.9 I would suggest creating a separate post for the D600 issue.

Doing a factory reset is a good idea.

If the in-camera menus for the D5300 have options for computer communication, you should try each of them. I believe that you do not want the communication mode set to expose the memory as a disk drive.

I'm actually having this same exact problem. I've tried two differnet usb cords, 3 ft long each. Same issue.   Tried both drivers since I'm not sure about firmware.  Windows 10.  Connected yesterday just fine and ran a test exposure.  Tried it with no memory card as well.  No luck yet.

I had the same problem, for me the solution was https://www.microsoft.com/en-ca/download/details.aspx?id=30679 and to select the VSU_4\vcredist_x86.exe option to download. When I ran it I selected the repair option. Everything all works just dandy now on Windows 10, ver 1803, OS build 17134.165

Further to my above post, when the latest Windows 10 update was installed the problem returned, and indeed affected all my software that could control my camera. Solution was to repeat  what I said above, and reboot 3 times! A look in settings/ update and security, showed that some updates couldn't be installed as other updates were in the process of being installed, hence the reboots.

Don't assume you have the same issue... replying to an old thread where a solution was found and documented (by re-installing the c++ redistributable) solved this old thread.  If you did this and you still have issues you don't have the same thing.  You should start a new thread for clarity and separation of issues.

Regards,
