Another Request to Add FITS Option

Question

It seems this has been suggested in the past but the response has generally been "suggest a good reason why".

I'm a member of the AAVSO and use their member only software VPHOT to stack and and do photometry on images of variable stars.  To use VPHOT the image must be uploaded as a FIT as shown below.

"Now upload a test image. VPhot will validate the FITS header and give you directions if anything needs to be done. Please follow these steps:

  •  Use only ONE image. This must be a valid FITS image with file extension .FIT,.FTS or .FITS"

I currently use a BYEOS supported Canon T7i which unfortunately isn't supported by any other imaging software I own that produces FITS (MaxIM DL or SGP).  I take my images with BYEOS (30 variable stars a night @10 exposures each), open them (all 300) in MaxIM DL, save them back as FITS, and then upload to the AAVSO's server.  Going directly from a BYEOS saved FITS to upload would save me considerable time.

Please consider adding FITS support to BYEOS.

FITS is a "manufactured / generic" Format, designed originally to facilitate Data Interchange from all sorts of Scientific Equipment (much not even Cameras).  To convert a Camera's output from RAW (whether CR2 or NEF) to FITS means that you will be dependent on and subject to Guylain's choices of Conversion Parameters.  This is usually something which most AP Imagers wish to have sole control over...

You may want to simply use a conversion program like Carsten Arnholm's at http://arnholm.org/astro/software/ImageTOOLSca/

You can then batch convert directly from RAW to FITS.  Not bad for about $30 US plus you get many other tools included.

I've used his wxAstroCapture program for years with my LE modified NexImage.

If you're cheap like me, you can use IRIS to convert.  See http://www.astrosurf.com/buil/iris/tutorial3/doc13_us.htm.  Another very high quality product in the public domain.  Rough learning curve, though.  Old school command line interface is very powerful.
