Autofocuser and location in subfolders

cfichter

Question

Hello - I've been using the Nikon product for about a year, love it!  Thank you very much.

A friend forwarded this video to me you folks put together. Terrific stuff, I learned 20 new features I didn't know about:

However, while watching the video, I have a couple of questions. In the autofocuser section (ASCOM focuser) it looks like he only uses the focusing arrows to manually get a better focus. But I would expect an autofocuser to talk to Backyard nikon in a way where it would be automated - so BYN would take a shot, then analyze the best focus based on one of the metrics (like FQHM) then BYN would signal to autofocuser to tighten, loosen etc. rinse and repeat in an automated fashion until best possible focus on seeing conditions could be found. Can BYN do this?  I don't want to move over to Sequence Generator Pro, my friend tells me SGP can do this.  During the video, Guylain mentions he works on BYN part time, and autofocusing is something he wanted to enhance. So the video is a couple of years old and I have the premium edition now, is this autofocusing enhancement included now? Is there a good tutorial how to set it up and use it?

Also, I love how you implemented the meta tagging for the file name fields, and I like how you can choose storage options and subfolder creation like target/date etc.  But I go to a lot of locations, and was wondering if there was a way or possibly you would consider a future feature where we could store the location in the subfolder structure automated in saving by BYN.  I don't think I'd want it in the file name itself, but would be nice to have target/location/date in subfolders.

Thanks

BYN/BYE supports computerized focusing via ASCOM. It does not do automatic computerized focusing.

The video is a few years old and other priorities, like creating BYN, and growing his business into an Internet merchandising outlet have kept him from adding autofocus capabilities to BYE and BYN.

Actually, I like having to think about the image capture process and making adjustments when and if I see the need. Hitting a go button and going to bed are not my style.

You can use the Filter field just right of the target field in the capture plan.

That field is a free form field.  You can even add pre-defined values in the settings dialog (space delimited) and this will show up in the file name.

Thanks Guylain - love the product!

Yep, I use the filter already, I have an IDAS and in dark skies don't use it, in other sites I do.  No worries, something in the future would be nice, our club in Oregon has about 6 sites we rotate from, each has different light pollution or other issues so would be cool to separate them by site in folders structure. I do it manually.

 Love BYN. thank you.
