Cannot get live view focus work on 77D

mbaddah

Question

Hi,

I just downloaded a trial copy of Backyard EOS and i'm trying to get the live view focus to work in the application. I've tried all possible combinations and i just get a black screen.

The camera connects fine and i'm able to image without a problem. I've checked the camera for exposure simulation and there doesn't seem to be an option for it in the camera menu, so i assume it's always on?

Appreciate any assistance thanks.

Hi Guylani i've attached the logs here. Let me know if there's anything else I can assist with. Thanks

Just as a thought.  It will not work with the 77D and the current release 3.1.12.

2017-08-01 20:50:59,830 [Main] INFO  - DEVICEINFO DESCRIPTION IS Canon EOS 77D
2017-08-01 20:50:59,830 [Main] INFO  - DEVICEINFO NUMBER IS 2971957811.
2017-08-01 20:50:59,846 [Main] INFO  - YOUR *REAL* MODEL NUMBER IS 2147484680(80000408)
2017-08-01 20:50:59,846 [Main] INFO  - Generic model 153 assumed!

However, with these numbers above I should be able to make it work.  I'll try to release 3.1.13 by Friday with 77D support.

Wow thanks Guylian I would be extremely gracious. I downloaded BackyardEOS with the intent of using it for photographing the upcoming solar eclipse. I saw on cloudynights that it now supports up to 100 exposures and so I wanted to script up the exposure sequence and give it a trial run.

Appreciate the great support.

This is a case where the Canon Software Development Kit library that is bundled with BYE 3.1.12 supports your 77D, but you are the first BYE user with that camera. Guylain needs the model number info which you provided in the log file to allow him to add support for your camera into the app.

In the meantime you might want to review the manual that was downloaded with your copy of BYE and the tutorials on this site to become familiar with the operation of BYE. In particular, you should be aware that BYE is intended for deep sky, long duration astrophotography or planetary imaging. Deep sky imaging utilizes exposures that are perhaps several minutes in length. Planetary imaging is lower resolution LiveView-based imaging with short exposures that are combined into a video file. Solar imaging is neither. With solar imaging you may want to shoot several short exposures in quick succession. BYE has difficulty with this type of imaging.

Depending on what you plan as an exposure sequence, BYE may not be fast enough; that is, there may be too much delay between exposures.. You can minimize that delay by getting the fastest memory card that you can find. Samsung makes the EVO Plus 100 MB/sec card. It may still take 5 seconds of delay between images, especially given the size of the 77D's sensor.

I am mentioning this because I don't want you to wait for BYE 3.1.13 only to find that it is not fast enough for what you intend.

Thanks Rick for this detailed response. Indeed I am testing BYE against other eclipse apps before i make a final decision which app i will want to use. I do also deep sky and planetary astrophotography (https://www.flickr.com/photos/mohammedalibaddah/albums/72157639882085384) so either way was hoping to purchase a copy of BYE :)

Will definitely purchase a faster memory card as mentioned. Appreciate the assistance.

Please try 3.1.13 which was just released.

Hi @admin unfortunately when I tried to download the update it said I already downloaded a trial and unable to download another one :(

Is there a way of updating it inside the app itself?

Thank you

No, you are doing it wrong.  You are trying at get a second trial key.  This is wrong.

Just go to the download page and download the new version and use the same trial key :)
