Canon 70D planetary

mrod

Question

Hello,

I just got a Canon 70D, and when trying to shoot in planetary mode the shutter's speeds are either too fast to capture the image (1:100 or faster) or too slow (bulb), I am not able to find a shutter speed of 1:25 for example. With bulb the image if of course too bright to see detail. Increasing the ISO to 6400 allowed by to get an image with the shutter speed of 1:100 but of course there was a lot of noise with that. Am I missing something? This was under planetary mode and with the camera on manual

Thanks

If you already know this then please accept my apologies.

In LiveView, the shutter speed acts only as a brightness control. When you set the shutter speed to BULB, the use of the shutter speed for exposure simulation is disabled and a default stretch is applied. For astrophotography, this is not what you want.

When you say "1:100" and "1:25" I am assuming that you mean 1/100th of a second and 1/25th of a second. I would set the ISO to 800 or lower and a shutter speed of 2 seconds. Then start shortening the shutter speed to darken the image. If you find that you do not see all the possible shutter speeds that should be available, then you need to disconnect the BYE from the camera, Clear the Cache (Advanced Settings screen), and re-connect with the camera to re-build the list of exposures.

The correct shutter speed will depend on the telescope, the object, and the ISO. A single frame will be noisy, but averaging 100 frames (as the best 10% of 1000 frames) will reduce the thermal noise.

I will also add the the 70D has a "B" dial mode to bulb and an "M" dial mode for shutter speeds.  You can not change shutter speed in B dial mode, you need to physically set the dial to "M" otherwise shutter speeds are not available.

Hope this makes sense.

Can you select shutter speed in imaging mode?  Is this only on planetary?

Thanks, I can but only up to 1/100 second, the next one is Bulb, only on Planetary. For Planetary ideally I would like a shutter speed of 1/25th of a second or so

Thanks, yes. I mean 1/100 sec, when I have done this with BYE before on a different Canon camera, I used to be able to use ISO 400 or 800 and shutter speed of 1/20th or 1/25th of a second or so, which gave me a good combination of ISO and fast speed to get sharp images, and get 2000-3000 frames and as you suggested pick the best 10%. With the Canon 70D I was not able to find a shutter speed between 1/100 and Bulb, and for example when shooting Saturn in order to get enough light on 1/100 I had to use very high ISO with the expected noise. I will try clearing the cache. I appreciate your response

Regards,

Thanks, I was shooting in M mode, and the options for shutter speed were Bulb, 1/100 th of a sec and faster, there were no options between Bulb and 1/100 and faster up to 1/8000th of a sec. For planetary I have always used 1/20-1/30th of a sec in the past.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I realized the issue was that I had an older version of BYE, after I donwloaded the recent version the problem was solved. Sorry...

Glad you got it to work.
