To "Close" or "Quit" EosUtilities to get BYE operational

mikepaling

Question

Hi Folk .....

Two night ago I set out to make my very first foray into Astro imaging using my new scope and my Canon 5D MkIII after weeks of very poor weather.

However I was totally frustrated because I kept getting an error message on BYE saying that I had to "close" EosUtilities and restart BYE. I repeated tried to "close" the Eosutlities but got nowhere  In the end had to give up in frustration and wasted a reasonably clear sky.

The next day I discovered what was causing the problem ......

The problem was caused by confusion between "closing" a window and "quitting" a program. Both the BYE help file and the actual program keeps saying "close" the eos utilities.

However .... the "X" at top right hand corner of the utilities window might close the window but it does not stop it from working in the background.

I discovered that I had to click on the "Quit" icon in order to make utilities stop working.

I think that the various help files need to clarify the terminalogy a bit more.

Happily I now know what to do ..... so last night I got me very first astro images .... I need a lot more practice though!!!!

Regards

Mike

Sorry that you had such Frustrations during what sounds like a Promising Night, but good to hear that you've learned how to Overcome the Issue with EOSUtility.

You may still find that EOSUtility has a frustrating habit that its Installer tries to setup so that it is Always Loaded in the Background.  You will need to be wary of that and if needed go into the EOSUtility Configuration Page to change that behavior.

Really, once you have confirmed that BackyardEOS can successfully Connect to your Camera, you have almost No Use for EOSUtility ever...

The latest version of EOSUtility (v2.13.20.0) did indeed give the option to stop it loading when the camera is connected to the computer .... but the latest version (v2.14.20.0), which I am using, does not seem to have this option available.
