Using BYE with Canon1DX Mk II

diane_miller

Question

Hoping to use the 1DX II with BYE, and the 400mm DO II lens (on an Orion Sirius).  I'm trying to test it in daylight.

Camera will connect but when I go to Frame & Focus, I don't see a picture on the screen.  The manual says the first time I use it with the camera to set LV in the camera menu, but there doesn't seem to be such an item.  I can put the camera in Live View with a button on the back and then can see the image on the camera's LCD screen, and the focus chevrons work, but no image appears on the computer screen area.  Is that correct?  Does an image only appear there if I snap an image?

There is a large table in the Store section of this web site that lists the supported models, along with any restrictions. Scroll to the bottom of this page and select Supported Cameras in the BackyardEOS section at the left side of the page. The table indicates that the 5D Mk III is fully supported.

It does, but I have to select from the choices of drivers(?) and then after those numbers it says "Generic Model 153 assumed."

Will that camera be supported anytime soon?  Is the Canon 7D Mk II supported?

If you get the generic 153 model then your camera IS NOT supported at this time.

And is the Canon 5D Mk III supported?

Both the 5D Mk III and 7D Mk II have been supported for some time now.  Please consult the camera support grid (link at the bottom of this page) and please always try with the latest version before asking if a camera is supported.

I'm so sorry I bothered you with this question.  That is a pretty hidden location for supported cameras.  I would expect to find it in a more obvious place.  And I would expect the documentation to be more up to date and comprehensive.  So I can understand this defensive and insulting response that assumes I am not using the latest version.  When I open a quality application it will tell me if there is an update.

Diane, please don't take offense with the responses posted on the Forum.  If you peruse the Threads, you'll find the same Question ("Does BYE support XXX??") and the same Answer ("The Support Grid is located in a Link at the Bottom." posted everywhere/every day.  So sometimes the answer comes off as a bit curt.

As for testing upon Startup for any New Updates...  Many of us BYE/BYN Users regularly Image in Remote Dark Sites with no chance of Internet Connectivity.  And others have Connectivity but shun it in order to avoid any chance of Microsoft Updates killing their Imaging Session in the middle of the Only Clear and Dark Night for the foreseeable forecast.  So...  BYE/BYN is built to specifically NOT Require Nor Use Internet Connectivity (except during the 30-Day Free Trial).

And the challenges of providing Support for specific Camera Models...  Well, Canon provides their SDKs "at some point after the Camera itself is released" (usually 6mo to a year later) with No Support.  There are 4-5 different Canon Model Lines (you seem to own a model from at least 3 of these), engineered by at least 6 different Design Teams (we've had a couple of opportunities for candid discussions with a Team Leader or two at various Trade Shows).  These Models don't always implement the same Command Structure (some of the most advanced Pro and Prosumer Models have some rather deep and perverse feature sets).  So, it's rather Amazing that Guylain (and a few developers of other similar AP Software) has been able to produce a UI that is as Straightforward and Consistent as it is...  If you want an even stronger Counter-Example, check out the Nikons...

Sorry if you were expecting something else from the Software or the Forum...

I do understand the challenges but civil answers are cheap to produce.  I don't have time to peruse a forum for simple, direct answers.  Frankly, you have come off as a bunch of jerks.

And yes, when imaging within range of our household network, thanks to the Wonders of Windows, I turn off internet connectivity.  (Yes, I have had a session ruined by the Windows idiocy.)  And at dark sites I don't have it anyway.  But there are times I would start the program at home to set up a capture sequence ahead of time.  If there is not a connection would that cause the program not to start?  Or I wonder if it is possible to simply inform registered users of updates by email?   AND to include version numbers in the list of supported cameras....

I wasn't defensive, I get asked this question several times a week.  That is all.

When you open a quality application... wow.  I'm not forcing you to use BYE!!!

Purchase keys do not required internet connection to start, it never did.  Only trial keys do.

You can already subscribe to file changes in the download section and you will get an email notification when I upload a new updated file/version.

If you get asked several times a week whether a camera model is supported, that should tell you that the information is not easy to find.  Fixing that would be easy.  And the location should be one of the first things in the user's manual, along with how to subscribe to updates.  But it is fine with me if you choose to make life difficult for yourselves and your customers.

It really is not difficult, there is an upgrade button in the orange menu bar at the top of the website, there is a link in every page footer of the website linking to the camera support grid, there is also a pinned thread in the forum for new cameras.  In addition you can subscribe to any thread here on the forum and you can subscribe to any download file to receive update when a new file/version is updated.  I will not spam users with upgrade emails; if you want an upgrade, come to the site and ask a question in the forum if you need to... but be polite and calling anyone that is trying to help names will get you nowhere... and I have no issues taking action when this is the case.

It is fine with me the you want everything delivered on a silver platter... but it won't happen with me.  Don't get me wrong, I will give you the moon if I have to, but I do have my limits and calling anyone names on a public forum is one of them.

Good luck,

Your original post asked about the 1DX Mk II. That model is supported by the most recent EOS SDK that is included with BYE. However, it is not yet supported by BYE (you are the first BYE owner to ask about that model). That is why, in post number 2 of this thread, Guylain asked about the device number and real model number that are displayed when you attempt to connect BYE to the Mk II. In the past, with those numbers provided by a user, Guylain has been able to provide a beta version of BYE that will connect to and recognize your camera. Then with a bit of testing on your part to confirm correct operation of BYE he will announce support for that model in the next published release of BYE. Not to speak for Guylain, but if you are willing to help it should not be too big a deal for either him or you to get that camera to work with BYE. The 1DX Mk II is not the only camera that is supported by the latest SDK that is not yet in the supported cameras list. Others include the 5Ds, 5Dsr, T6i. I can only assume that this is because nobody has asked about support or offered to help test a pre-release version of BYE.

Putting the list of supported cameras in the user guide does not help someone who does not yet have the software to make an informed buying decision since they have to have the software and the user guide to determine if their camera is supported. It is also a headache for Guylain since he must potentially update the user guide with each release of BYE.

That said, you are not wrong. The fact that lots of people choose to try BYE or BYN before finding out whether it is compatible with their camera is an ongoing issue. I have pointed dozens, if not hundreds, of potential and new owners of BYE to the Supported Cameras page. That is despite the fact that there are numerous links to the page elsewhere on the site. As a volunteer who provides free support for BYE I would like to not have to be continually answering the same question about supported cameras.

Some things that could be done to eliminate just this question would be to have an FAQ page that points to the supported cameras page (yet another link to that info). The download process could include a step to prompt the user to verify that their camera is supported before downloading. Still I will guarantee that there will be people who will be surprised that their camera is not supported. Numerous times I someone has said, "I knew that it was not in the supported cameras list, but I thought that I would try anyway...When will it be supported?"

If you have other suggestions, you should create a post in the Feature Suggestion Box forum to explain them.

I am happy to participate in a civil conversation here.  My suggestion about the user's guide was not to list supported cameras there;  of course that would not be practical.  I was suggesting it would be easy for the guide to point to the rather obscure location on the web site where the list can be found.  But your point is well taken that even putting it in the guide is "too late."  Why not make it easier for people to find up front, when they need it?

Later today I will be using the Windows laptop and i will copy the numbers and post them here.  The inquiry above about whether I saw numbers there did not ask me to copy them.  I would have been happy to do so if an explanation was given as you have here, and asking if I would be willing to help test a pre-release version.

Her camera is the 1DX Mk II.

Yeah, I know this is the model mentioned in original post, but there is mention of a 5D Mk III and 7D Mk II as well in this thread and I want/need to make sure I associate the correct model.  Once I get confirmation I should be able to provide a download link within a day or 2 tops.

Thank you

Interesting - I have the same or very similar problem with my 'old' 1DX.

The screen is black in Live View and any adjustment to ISO or Shutter Speed or ......... makes no change to the Live image.

Taking the picture however and making adjustments you can see the changes.

I also have a 5DIII and that works fine in Live View, I can make adjustments to the camera settings in LV and the changes take affect on the screen - increase ISO and the stars are brighter.

The 1DX seems to have fixed setting in LV that result in a black screen. Up the ISO and Shutter time and still black in LV but take the shot and you can start to see the stars.

Hope its an easy one.

Thanks in advance.
