BYE Not displaying JPG files in Image Center list and is Not Downloading JPG files to Folder

rodandellen@live.com

Question

I just started using BYE today and I have been experimenting with the program and my camera (EOS 80D).  Everything seems to be working OK except the photo downloads to my laptop.  Even though BYE is set to capture both RAW and JPG photos, only the CR2 files are showing up in the Image Center and in my selected download folder on my laptop.  It does download "Preview" JPGs to the laptop.

Any thoughts?

A new twist to this issue.  I have been experimenting with a 50' USB connection between PC and camera.  Everything was going OK except that image downloads were taking a lot longer with the 50' cable.  Still just getting RAW files to save.

Please realize that most USB-Ethernet operate at Half-Duplex 100Mbps - that is significantly slower than USB2 (and old 10Mbps Ethernet is even WORSE).  Can you confirm that your Connector/Converter pair doesn't default to 10Mbps or USB1.1??

Then I tried saving both to "PC + Camera".  When I did that I started getting both RAW and JPG files saved to the PC and the Camera.  I switched back to "Save to PC" only and only got RAW files saved to PC.

The Canon SDK for many of the Prosumer Models - 60D, 70D - - doesn't support "PC+Camera", so count yourself "Lucky"...  (I know that doesn't help...)

No, I can't confirm what you ask.  In fact, I have to plead ignorance with regard to that whole issue.  But I can believe what you are positing, the download of each RAW image takes upward of a minute.  Thanks for the insights.

Most USB Cat5 extenders, especially the inexpensive models, are USB 1.1. If you were downloading at USB 2.0 speeds I would expect your image to download in 10 seconds or less.

Of course you can test this by temporarily connecting the camera to the PC with only the short USB cable that came with the camera. This should use USB 2.0.

If that's confirmatory for you then I will attest that downloads typically take only a few seconds with the short USB A/B cables that I use for interfacing with my PC.  So you're saying that 50' of CAT6 and my adapters would download at a similar pace if they were equivalent to USB 2.0.  Instead they're behaving as USB 1.1.  Length is not the issue.

Nobody said that length was your issue, only that the Cat5 extender might be slowing things down because it only supports USB 1.1 speeds.

There seems to be one of 3 causes for the JPG download issue:

1) The SDK is preventing the JPG download for some reason (either by design or a bug)

2) The camera (your 80D) is malfunctioning

3) Canon does not intend for that model to be able to download JPG images in addition to RAW.

Nobody else has reported this issue, but since there is little reason to download the JPG images, it could be more widespread than just you.

There seems to be little that Guylain can do to fix this. The best hope is that the issue will go away when Canon releases a new version of the SDK.

I appreciate your informed insights.  However, I have to say that it was I who presumed that it was a cable length issue and said so somewhere above.

Otherwise, I had arrived at the conclusion that a new SDK might resolve the issue because that's what Guy had said earlier in this thread in November when I first reported this issue.  He'd tried a simple solution by introducing a 1 second delay between downloads of CR2 and JPG files into the code of BYE.  That didn't work.  So now we wait for a new SDK (I guess that means "software development kit").

Thanks for your thoughts.

I haven't tried using JPG only for Image Capture.  However, the system is downloading my "Preview" JPG files OK.  I'll attempt Image Capture in JPG only and see what happens.

Not the first 80D user, but could be the first using both RAW + JPG.

I can see from the log files that the camera is set for both RAW + JPG.  This is confirmed at download time since the camera actually fires a second download event with a memory pointer where the JPG image is... but when that call is made the camera throws an exception... all other models do not throw an exception so this tells me the 80D is different somehow, but how?

hmmm...why do they keep making things hard?

Do I sense an 80D rental in your future?

Maybe... at the end of the day a camera is a hardware device and sometime it is all about timing, a 100ms pause between both download commands can make a huge difference,  That would be my first step... but only if the OP comes back confirming that it does work with only JPG.

I bought the camera new from B&H Video in August.  The Image Quality has generally been set to RAW + Large JPG by default for my own purposes.

I just took a snapshot with the camera Image quality set to RAW + Large JPG.  I got both CR2 and JPG images and both downloaded from the camera to my PC.

I attempted additional image captures with BackyardEOS with the same result:

-  Preview registered in Image Center and JPG downloaded successfully to target folder;

-  CR2 file registered in Image Center and downloaded successfully to correct folder;

-  JPG file not.

I have attached the log file for that session

Thanks,

Rod Michael

Sorry your post is confusing...

1) You said you took a snap shot and you got both?  Where?  In BYE?  Using the camera buttons?

2) Then you said your tried BYE with same result?  Same result as what?  The above where both were downloaded?  Or as before where they did not?

3) JPG file not??? means not downloaded?  Was that JPG alone or RAW+JPG?

I apologize for being confusing.

1.  I took a snapshot with the camera the way one ordinarily would.  I downloaded the CR2 and JPG files of that snapshot to the folder to which I ordinarily download snapshots.  Both files downloaded successfully as they usually do.

2.  I made another attempt with BYE to do some image captures with the same result I first posted: a.) The "Preview" JPG registered in the Image Center and downloaded to my PC; b.) The Image Capture CR2 files registered in the image center; c.) the Image Capture CR2 files downloaded to the target folder on my PC; d) the Image Capture JPGs neither registered in the Image Center nor downloaded to the target folder.

3.  When I do Image Capture of JPG only, the JPG file registers in the Image Center and is downloaded to the target folder.

I hope I have been clearer in my descriptions.  I have attached the log file of the JPG Only Image Capture

Thanks for your help!!!

BTW, I presume that the 100ms delay between download commands for the CR2 and JPG files is a coding exercise on your part to attempt to fix the issue.  I will be glad to be a "guinea pig" for any coding experiments you may want to attempt for the 80D if you don't have one readily available.

Sincerely

Rod

Rod,

Can you please do the test that Guylain requested? Do not take a Preview image from Frame And Focus.

In the Settings dialog set the Image Quality to JPG only. On the Imaging screen, execute a short capture plan to download a couple of images. Does the capture plan result in JPG images being on your PC hard drive?

Thanks.

 Guylain and Astroman133,

I already did that and posted the result about 45 minutes ago along with the log file for that session.

OK, I was confused by your use of the Preview term for the JPG. In BYE Preview is a different function.

So when you did the imaging session with the Image Quality of JPG only, it downloaded, saved, and displayed. So the only issue is when you choose RAW & JPG that you do not get the JPG.

Is that correct?

Thanks,

There are multiple events that I'm reporting:

1.  I understand that "Preview" is a separate, specific function in BYE. That's why I italicized the word "Preview" and that's why I reported the results of "Preview" in its own separate bullet.

2.  "Preview" generates it's own medium JPG file and downloads it to the same target folder as "Image Capture" does.

3.  When Image Capture" is set to capture only a JPG photo it successfully registers the file in the "Image Center" and downloads it to the target folder.

4.  It's when I attempt "Image Capture" of both RAW and JPG files that the JPG file fails to download.

Best regards,

Rod

Yes, the 100ms pause is a coding fix, I would need to send you an new installer once this is done.

For now, we can confirm that the issue of jpg not downloading is only when both RAW+JPG is selected in the image capture plan.

Thank you

Thanks very much for your patience and understanding.  I hope that I can get BYE to work successfully with my camera.  My new telescope (Celestron 11" RASA on a CGX mount) is in the mail.  Everyone (and I mean everyone) I have spoken with is very positive about the marriage of BYE, a Canon EOS camera, and successful astrophotography.

Have a good weekend and Thanksgiving (although, I guess our Thanksgiving is not a Canadian observance).

I was just wondering when we might expect Guy to complete the coding changes for download of both RAW and JPG photos from the Canon EOS 80D. Please don't feel that I'm pushing.  It's almost entirely out of curiosity that I ask; although, I would be only fooling myself if I denied eagerly awaiting his coding solution.  I understand that BYE is Guy's nighttime "labor of love" and not his "daytime job."

Thanks,
Rod
