Color format

JLabrecque

Question

I am currently using BYN with my D300.  I am saving to the laptop both RAW and JPEG files.  I use Nikon Capture NX to open pics and never had issues opening and manipulating.  When I attempt to open the RAW file captured using BYN in Capture NX I get the  message " Invalid color format.  The file format is not supported".  No problem opening the JPEG's but you can't do much with JPEG's.

Is there a color format setting in BYN?  My D300 has always been set to sRGB with no issues.

Should I save as TIFF?  Can you do picture manipulation with TIFF's?

Thanks

John

BYN simply uses the NIKON SDK to facilitate transfer of the Image Data from the Camera to the PC via the USB.

It is the same "File" as if it were recorded to the Camera's SD Card and later downloaded after the Imaging Session were completed.

The NEF file is as-is from the camera. BYN makes no attempt whatsoever to alter the image data.

It is possible that Capture NX does put additional data in the NEF file that it expects to be there.

If you take a picture using the camera only...

1) Can you open this image in Capture NX

2) Can you open this image in BYN by dragging it into the image box (premium feature only)?

TIFF is still a RAW format image.

1. Yes RAW pics taken with the camera can be opened in NX.

2. Yes BYN will open the RAW when dragged to the image box.

Pics moved by stick from laptop BYN to PC can be opened by NX.  I did find the NX version in the PC is 1.3 and the laptop is 1.1 (which is the default program that opens the files saved by BYN).  Looks like it might be an NX version issue.  Photoshop Elements also opens the BYN file with no problem.

Looks like processing will have to be done in PC only.  Nikon no longer supports Capture NX.

Thanks for your help.
