According to the BYN Camera Support Grid, the D7000 requires a second cable just for shutter control of BULB exposures. This has always been so.

Probably your indoor testing was done with short exposures where the shutter is controlled by the camera (not the PC). For exposures that are shot in BULB mode the shutter is controlled by BYN. BYN uses the Nikon SDK to control your camera and the Nikon SDK does not support BULB shutter control via USB for the D7000. So, as an alternative, BYN can use a DSUSB (serial) shutter control cable that plugs into the remote shutter jack on the camera to open and close the shutter for BULB exposures. This additional cable is available from Shoestring Astronomy. You can Google them or follow the link at the top of the Camera Support Grid.
