Long wait (> 5mins) for BackyardEOS to start

cbphoto

Question

Dear Sir/Madam:

I am using trial version of BackyardEOS v3.1.6 and when I double click to run BackyardEOS sometimes nothing shows up for ~ 5 minutes.

I can see the process "BinaryRivers.BackyardEOS.Start.Camera1.exe *32 in Windows Task Manager, but the application doesn't run... until all of a sudden the program will start, minutes later.

Can you please help solve this?

Thanks

Jon

Jon,

Can you describe what type of computer system you are running BYE on?

What version of Windows?

What CPU and speed?

What else is running on the PC?

Is this a new issue? Has BYE ever started normally?

BYE 3.1.7 is new the newest stable release. Does this new version have the same symptoms?

Thanks for the reply, Nuclear Fusion.

I am using Windows 7 Professional 64-bit with SP1.

Processor is Intel Core i5-4300U CPU @1.90GHz.

I had StellariumScope, Stellarium, PHD2 running.

I tried to remove all USB connections (to the Guide Camera, to the Mount) but that didn't help.

BYE has started normally before, like right now this morning it starts instantaneously.

I suggest you start task manager and monitor disk usage.  I suspect you have limited RAM and that Windows is forced swap things IN/OUT if virtual memory constantly.

I run BYE on a dual CORE Zotac PI320 mini pc and it takes just a few seconds to load, maybe 10 to 15 seconds at most.

Keep us posted.

Regards.

Thanks Astroman133 and Guylain.

I have 4GB of RAM, and I don't suspect swapping is the problem but I will monitor.

Would the activation/validation process be a problem? I just read thru some other posts here and they say that validation of the license sometimes takes minutes?

4 GB should be sufficient, but 8 GB would be better.

I do not believe that license validation normally occurs at startup once BYE is permanently licensed.

If you are using the free trial, then internet access is required to validate the temporary license at startup.

If you send me the log file I can tell you if this is the case.  but this is very unlikely.

Got the log file, thank you.

Go to settings let us know if you have 3rd party integration enabled.

I see a 2 minute dead time between 2 log entries.

2016-07-19 22:34:48,935 [Main] INFO  - 4 CPU(s), Processor Affinity is not SET
2016-07-19 22:36:41,120 [Main] INFO  - Camera action fired: 'FirePropertyValues'

A few actions are taking place between these log entries and one of them is the 3rd party integration TCP Server being started.  If you have the 3rd party integration enabled disable it a try again.

Okay, I know this is a weird request but disconnect your computer from the internet and start BYE.  Do you still observe the same slow behavior?

Keep us posted,

I just realized that you are using a trial version.  This test above will fail because trial require Internet each time you start it.  However, I would like to know if it takes 2 minutes to fail or if it fails instantly without an Internet connection.  This test will still help me to isolate the root cause.

Thank you

Oh, and which anti-virus are you using?

Guylain, not sure what you mean by "fail". This is because almost every time if I open BYE and wait for long enough, the program will start.

I feel it took longer than 2 minutes though.

Question: On the trial version, once BYE successfully runs once with license validation, is there a certain period of time after that you will not check license validation again if I close BYE and re-open? I ask this because that's what I tried -- I opened BYE, it worked, then I closed BYE, then I disabled all internet connections, and then I reopened BYE and it worked.

The Antivirus used in this computer is McAfee VirusScan Enterprise + AntiSpyware Enterprise.

No, trial will validate the key each time.  This is no way around this and this is by design.

By fail I mean the trail validation process will fail when 'calling home' to verify the license status.  BYE Trial will not start without an Internet connection.  But I would like to know if it takes 2 minutes to fail or 2 seconds.

However, I think the issue is McAfee.  I've had handful of users having some issues with McAffee.  IF you disable your anti-virus during the BYE start up only, it is still slow?

I think that you meant to say that BYE will not start withOUT an Internet connection.

The OP is not reporting that it doesn't start only that it sometimes takes a long time to start. Could it be due to a slow response from the licensing validation process?

Yep, thanks for pointing it out.  I corrected my post already.

Thanks
