Mirror lockup setting in my camera is disabled

naoky1970

Question

Hello,

I use EOS 700D/T5i (Kiss X7i) and BYE 3.1.6 Premium Edition.

I  want to use mirror lockup capability and everything goes well

unless I use Sequence Generator Pro(SGP, by Main Sequence

Software Inc.).

BYE doens not seem to mind the mirror lockup setting in my

camera menu even if mirror lockup is needed, but SGP needs it

enabled to capture with mirror lockup capability.

The problem is that after I use BYE, the mirror lockup setting in

my camera menu is disabled.  This makes me to set the mirror

lockup in my camera menu enabled again every time in order to

use SGP.  It is annoying.

Is it possible BYE not to reset the mirror lockup setting in my camera?

Thanks in advance.

Well... I can guarantee you 110% that BYE is NOT setting the mirror lock property ON of OFF without you telling it to.

For the T5i, if you set the "mirror" value to a value > 0 BYE with set it on when you start a capture plan.  If you set the value to 0 BYE with set it off when you start a capture plan.

All you have to do is set this value to 1 (or whatever number of second you want/need) and BYE will make sure it is on.

However, mirror lock add zero value in long exposure photography... are you sure you need it?  Or are you just using it because it is there?

Regards,

Hello,

Thank you for your quick replay.

I mean BYE seems to always set mirror lockup property disable after disconnecting the camera,

regardless of mirror lockup value in capture plan.  So when I switch to use SGP, I must always set

the property to enable in my camera menu (if I want to use mirror lockup capability in SGP).

By the way, I am newbie for astrophotography and I have thought mirror lockup would be important,

but is it my misunderstanding?

Guylain,

The OP is complaining about BYE changing the camera's mirror lock setting.

The way to duplicate this is to:

1) enable Mirror Lockup in the camera's menu

2) connect the camera to the PC and BYE

3) take an image (mirror lock value does not matter)

4) Disconnect BYE and exit

5) Look in the camera's menu and mirror lock is disabled

BYE changed the Mirror Lockup setting.  This changes the behavior of SGP.

It does not appear to matter if the last images are taken with Mirror lock > 0 in BYE.  It is still disabled in the camera after the disconnect, even if the camera is unplugged without disconnecting..

I duplicated the reported behavior with BYE 3.1.6 and my T5i, and BYE is changing the in-camera setting, but if BYE can, it also seems like SGP can.  So, it seems like this is an SGP error!

To the OP, if the mirror flipping up causes your scope to shake significantly then there may be a problem with your scope!  Any shake at all should be very short-lived and irrelevant for deep sky astrophotography.  I have never used mirror lockup.  However, lots of newbies see some logic to it and so try to.

If SGP requires Mirror Lockup to be enabled, then it should set it that way.

Interesting Rick, and your are correct.  I just checked in code and mirrorlock is set to false after an imaging run.  I'm not sure why I did that actually but the OP 100% correct and I was wrong in my first reply.  Thank you Rick for the investigation work and for setting the record straight.

Hello,

Thank you for interpreting my poor English.

That is exactly what I would like to mention.

Your comment is helpful for newbie like me.

I believed blindly mirror lockup was needed.

Next time I will try not to use mirror lockup

with SGP.

Thank you very much.

Mirror lock is completely useless for long exposure photography.

This is one of those feature that people want (even firmly believe) to use because it sounds cool and logical.  But the fact is any vibration (if any) caused by the mirror flip and a flimsy mount is washed out after just a few seconds into the exposure and since we take anywhere from 60 to 600+ second exposure it provides zero value.
