D810A and Long Exposure NR

Question

If the Long exposure NR is enabled the software drops out of the exposure sequence during the Cameras Processing of the NR. It will not complete a sequence of exposures. The NR takes as much time to process as the actual exposure. I was expecting to use the "Pause" time to wait. But, the software drops out of the sequence and will not complete.

I have a D800, and the D810a may be different, but with the D800, even if you have in-camera noise reduction turned off, at ISO1600 and higher the camera overrides the setting, and does in-camera noise reduction, ie takes dark frames. This of course loads up the buffer.

 

Well, if that is truly the case then Nikon is doing their D800 (and maybe D810a) Customers QUITE the DISSERVICE.

 

In-Camera Long Exposure Noise Reduction applies only a Single Dark to the Light Frame being collected - and in the process maks it NEAR IMPOSSIBLE to do standard AP Imaging Calibration (including Bias as well as Darks Calibration).  The LENR will remove Hot Pixels, but little else...

I would recommend not using Long Exposure NR.  It cuts your productivity (dark sky usage) in half since the camera takes twice as long for each image. Take separate dark frames, instead.  They give you more flexibility because the master darks can be put into a library. Then you can pull a matching master dark frame (temperature, ISO, and exposure) from this library for calibrating your light frames.

 

It could be that BYN is "timing out" when it does not receive a signal that the image is ready to be downloaded.  It does not get the signal because the camera is busy taking the dark frame.  I had thought that BYN was tolerant of this, but perhaps not.

Not sure what you mean by drop off but you do not need to use pause for NR, BYN will automatically wait.  This should be transparent to the user.

 

However, Rick is correct.  You are better off without LNR and use a library of darks instead.

I have both the D800e (modified and heat reduction system added) and D810a and neither of my cameras make adjustments to Long Exposure Noise Reduction at any ISO.  Not too sure what is going on with their camera.  There is zero reason to turn LENR on - build a library of take dark frames
