Question

I just downloaded Backyard EOS for astrophotograhy purposes.  However, my camera is not connecting.  I have both the R and the R5.  Is there a driver and/or utility that I need to install?  Is so, could you send me a link.

The low-level driver for communicating with Canon cameras is included with Windows 8 and later.

The Canon Software Development Kit (SDK) that BYE uses is included with BYE. From a software standpoint that should be all you need to talk to a supported EOS camera. Both the R and R5 are listed as supported. However there are other factors that can prevent connection.

1) Windows must detect when the camera is connected and powered on to load the low-level driver.

2) There must not be any other software connected with the camera in order for BYE to connect. This means that no other camera control software can be connected and Windows itself must not make the camera's SD card available as a portable storage device. In order to ensure the latter, you must select Take No Action when the Windows AutoPlay menu is displayed.

3) You must disable WiFi in the camera and connect the camera to the PC with a short cable that is new or known to be working.

If you try all of the preceding suggestions please come back and let us know in as much detail what you have done and what you are seeing when you fail to connect.

Please follow the instructions in the orange banner at the top of this web page. Which version of BYE are you trying to use to connect to your cameras?

The full version number will be something like 3.2.3 or 3.5.0.RC5 x64.

Please explain what you mean by "My computer reads the camera".

If BYE is able to control your camera on one computer but not another, please explain in as much detail as you can the differences between the two computers. Are you using the same version of BYE in all cases? What are the detailed steps that result in a failed connection?

The more detail that you are able to provide, the more quickly the community and the developers can help to provide solutions.
