How to focus with Bathinov & low resolution

FERRAN_BOSCH

Question

Hello, it's been a long time since I was disconnected from astrophotography and obviously also from capture software. My question is related to the focus with Bathinov, when using a very low focal length (360mm) it is very difficult for me to discern that the diffraction beam is in the centre, how can I increase the exposure time and the sensitivity of the live view, to be able to see the star with a bigger size?

Are you using 5X zoom?

Have you tried using the focus metrics FWHM or HFD rather than using the mask?

Yes, in fact until recently I used the focus metrics, but with Bathinov it's "easier", I can zoom in, but the diffraction rays are not seen clearly, that's why I ask if it's possible to increase the exposure time of the live view. Now I'm using Jupiter to focus with the Bathinov mask, but it won't always be there to help me 🫡

PS: nice to talk to you

LiveView frames arrive into BYE as fast as possible. It is not possible to increase their exposure time. You can control their brightness by lengthening the duration value and/or the ISO.

You can also take short Snap Exposures rather than use LiveView. They can also be used with the focus metrics, just as you would with LiveView. I have never tried to use BYE's Bahtinov mask functionality with Snap images.

Also, I always use a bright star for focusing rather than using a planet or the Moon. That said, I have not often shot at a short focal length as you are.

Thanks for the welcome Guylan, work issues prevented me from continuing with astrophotography,
I just retired and have taken it up again. I also had the pleasure of translating it into Catalan or Spanish, I don't remember, do you remember? A hug and forgive me for so many questions, but I'm updating myself at a fast pace hehe
