Camera not found

Hummingbird

Question

Just bought the premium edition.  I'm using a Canon EOS 250D and a Canon EOS RP.  Attempted to use both and the same error message that the camera not found pops up.  I've attempted to use use both sets of options Canon and Canon 210.  Neither work.  Suggestions to resolve this issue?

The HDMI cable is only for showing pictures and videos from a camera directly onto a television or monitor. An HDMI port on a computer is typically for connecting an additional monitor. HDMI does not support control functions such as changing settings, taking pictures, and downloading images that is needed by BYE. Those functions require the use of a USB cable between the camera and the PC.

I updated my previous post describing common issues that result in a connection failure to add that an HDMI cable will not work; a USB cable must be used.

Got it.  I bought the right cable and the program works as designed.  Thanks again.

First, the Canon 210 option is for much older cameras that Canon no longer supports. Most of them require 32-bit Windows because Canon never wrote 64-bit low-level drivers for them. You need to use the Canon option for both your cameras.

Now, the most common reasons why BYE can't connect to a camera are:

wrong cable, bad cable, cable too long, or WiFi is enabled - BYE does not support WiFi as a means to control an EOS camera. If your camera supports WiFi connectivity for uploading pictures to a PC you need to use the camera's menus to disable it. Then connect the camera to the PC with a good quality USB cable that is not too long. The USB 2.0 standard has a max length of 5 meters (about 16.5 feet). If you need a longer cable you need to add an active extension cable to get the extra length.  Also, you must use a USB cable, not an HDMI cable. The HDMI cable is only for showing pictures and videos from a camera directly onto a television or monitor. An HDMI port on a computer is typically for connecting an additional monitor. HDMI does not support control functions such as changing settings, taking pictures, and downloading images that is needed by BYE. Those functions require the use of a USB cable between the camera and the PC.

some other application is already connected to the camera - Only one application can be connected to the camera at a time. If you installed the Canon EOS Utility application it is possible that Windows is automatically connecting the EOS Utility app to the camera when Windows first recognizes the camera. This can prevent BYE from connecting.

running a broken or unsupported version of Windows - If you are running Windows 10 or Windows 11 and are keeping the operating system up-to-date with Windows Updates this should not be a problem. Plug a short known good USB cable into the PC and the camera and turn the camera on. Windows Plug and Play should see the new device right away. It should make a "ta da" sound and tell you about the new device. You should also be able to see the camera in the Windows Device Manager's list. My T5i shows up under the "Portable Devices" list heading. If Windows does not recognize the camera then BYE will not be able to connect. If you are running a version of Windows that is older than Windows 10, then I would strongly suggest upgrading to Windows 10 or 11 or getting a new PC.

Let us know how it goes or if you have any additional questions.

Tell us about the USB cable you are using?

I'll investigate the cable recommendation.  Windows is up to date; cable is only 6 ft; WiFi is not engaged; and no other apps are connected or running.  I have two ports for connecting.  One is a mini HDMI and the other is a USB micro.  Should both work, or is one preferred over the other?  My intent is to purchase a new cable of 10 ft to accommodate the movement of the scope while tracking.  Thank you for taking the time to explain the possible problems and recommended solutions.

You have to use the USB micro, HDMI is not meant to control the camera. If you've been using the HDMI cable until now, that explains your connection issue.

Keep us posted.

Understood.  Thank you for you patience. I'll order the right cable and get back to you.
