Having problems contacting my old Canon 20D

lietzed

Question

Bought this software in 2017 and updated it and reactivated the key but when I tried to connect the camera I get these 4 messages.

1) Make sure EOS Utility is not running.

Not sure what this means.  On the computer or on the camera?

2) Make sure the camera is turned on and the battery is fully charged.

The camera is on and the battery is full charged

3) If you are trying to connect a DIGIC II camera model such as the 5D, 20D, 20Da, 30D, or 350D make sure your are running Windows 32 bits.  These models do not work on Windows 64 bits.

How do I check this?

4) If you are using a USB hub, remove it, connect the camera directly in a USB port on your computer and try again.

Not using a hub. Single cable. Also tried another cable with the same result.

If you are still having issues please visit our support forum at http://forum.otelescope.com and open a support ticket.

So here I am.  Any suggestion??

1) Make sure EOS Utility is not running.

The Canon EOS Utility is a Canon camera control program, similar to BYE, but not focused on astrophotography. It if is connected to the camera BYE will not be able to connect. Also if it is installed, it can be configured to connect to the camera as soon as Windows first sees the camera. It is a separate installation, from the CD that came with the camera, so unless you chose to install it, this is likely not your problem.

2) Make sure the camera is turned on and the battery is fully charged.

If the camera is connected and powered on, and Windows shows the camera in the Windows Device Manager then this is not causing your issue.

3) If you are trying to connect a DIGIC II camera model such as the 5D, 20D, 20Da, 30D, or 350D make sure your are running Windows 32 bits.  These models do not work on Windows 64 bits.

If your computer is a 32-bit computer then you must be running Windows 32-bit. You also need to install the 32-bit Canon camera driver that is on the CD that came with the camera, even if it says it is for Windows XP.

To determine this, you should Google "what version of Windows am I running" and follow the instructions. The answer varies according to what version is actually installed.

4) If you are using a USB hub, remove it, connect the camera directly in a USB port on your computer and try again.

Since you have tested another cable, this does not seem likely to be your issue.

It is also possible that the camera's USB port has died. You could also try plugging the camera into a different USB port on the computer.

I really recommend that you pick up a newer camera that is fully supported on Windows 10 or later AND BYE. It will have LiveView and you will be able to take advantage of the technology improvements that Canon has made since the 20D was released.

The camera will transfer pictures to the computer and I'm running Windows 10.  No sure if I understand BYE.  I am thinking about connecting a camera that has been successfully connected to another computer running this software.  And that could rule out the camera but if it does not connect that would mean that it maybe the computer or the software.  Thanks for your advice but what I need is some on the phone while I trying to resolve this problem.  Not getting much help from the company I bought the software from.  Maybe I need a different software before I buy a new camera.

You probably do not realize it, but O'Telescope is a small shop and a part-time effort at that. This is why the software is so reasonably priced. It is not normal for the developers to provide support outside of this forum, although they have in some rare cases provided support via remote connection to a user's PC to troubleshoot an unusual issue. I have never heard of them providing telephone support to a user. They have day jobs outside of O'Telescope.

Also your issue does not seem to be unusual.

We have asked you questions that you have not answered. That makes it difficult to provide quality, targeted advice.

If your new Windows 10 computer is a 64-bit computer running 64-bit Windows then you will never be able to connect BYE to your 20D. The 20D was retired by Canon before the 64-bit era and Canon chose to not support retired models on 64-bit computers. There is nothing that O'Telescope can do about this. This by Canon choice affects all DIGIC I cameras and all of the DIGIC II models except for the 400D (XTi) which was the last DIGIC II camera released.

If your new PC is running 32-bit Windows then it may work with BYE, but (and this is a big BUT) it is up to you to install the low-level Canon driver in order for the PC to recognize the camera. There may be a couple of ways to do this. 1) Install the driver from the software CD that came with the camera. 2) Install the Canon EOS Utility application from either the Canon web site or from the software CD that came with the camera. Option 2) will also install the driver that the EOS Utility, and BYE, need.

If the low-level driver is correctly installed and the camera is plugged into the PC and powered on, you should see that the Windows Device Manager has the camera listed. If you installed the Canon EOS Utiity you need to make sure that it is not connected to the camera when you try to connect BYE with the camera since only 1 application at a time can control the camera.

I hope this helps. If you still have an issue, please read and carefully answer the questions that we have previously asked. It may not be obvious to you, but the answers to them are critical to giving you the advice that you will need to move forward.
