can't install BYN on Win 7

mmckeag

Question

I just purchased and downloaded BYN Premium and attempted to run installation file but popup message announced that .NET Framework 4.0 was required to run BYN. Downloaded .NET Framework 4.0 installer from Microsoft but near the end of the download was warned the file contained a virus and was deleted. Tried to find away around this barrier, including attempt to download .NET Framework 4.5, but received the same virus warning. I'm totally stumped. Any suggestions?

You have something else going on...Windows 7 comes with .NET 4.0 and 4.5 pre-installed and active.  It also comes with .NET 3.5 installed, but it is de-activated.  I would suggest that you activate .NET 3.5, via the Control Panel's Programs and Features applet.  I hope that you have not broken .NET 4.0. If you get the same issue you may need to suspend your anti-virus software to install BYE, but this is rarely needed.

Thanks for the suggestions. It turned out Norton AV was malfunctioning. In the course of a long session with Norton tech support we removed and reinstalled Norton AV (not easy, since all file downloads were being blocked, including from Norton). I checked for .NET 4.0, not present, only 3.5, already activated. With Norton AV fixed .NET 4.0 download succeeded, but install failed. Needed missing updates. Next culprit, Windows Updater, which is not working. Searches of MS support resources have so far not produced a solution. A call to my brother who is a software engineer also not fruitful. Wondering if a complete uninstall/reinstall of Windows may be necessary. I'm running Win 7 on Parallels on a MacBook Pro. Quite frankly, over the years, I've come to detest Windows. Only have it installed to run SkyTools and ImagesPlus (and BYN eventually). Open to less drastic suggestions for fixing Windows Updater. Then again, maybe its time to remove Windows from the MacBook permanently and buy a mini-PC to run the Windows astronomy apps (controlled remotely from the MacBook).

I don't want to get into it, but at least 50% of all "Windows Issues" on Mac/Parallels combos are actually the Fault of Parallels - App or Config - and the fact that it is NOT 100% Equivalent to a Hardware PC.  Many of the "BYE/BYN-on-Mac/Parallels Issues" have been resolved on the Parallels side.
