Canon EOS 60Da does not turn on

jcsuarez

Question

Hello,

I have just downloaded your program Backyard EOS last week. I used it a couple of nights attached to my Canon EOS 60Da with good results. I liked the program.

The next day I tried to switch on my camera, not connected to the PC, and it did not start. I tried everything: new batteries, new memory card, new lenses, etc. The camera is completely dead.

I have found on the Internet some comments of people experiencing similar problems; most dated from 2013, but I could not find any solution to it.

Have you any suggestions about a solution to the problem?

I would appreciate your answer,

Regards,

Juan Camilo Suarez

Thanks Guylain!

I was just observing the camera support in your grid, now that I have to decide if 70D or 80D, and of course it's vital for me that my new camera is supported by BYE right now

I see that you say 70D is DIGIC IV (four) and 80D is DIGIC VI (six), and both are supported by BYE

But, according to Canon, a 70D is DIGIC V+ (five plus), whatever that is....

Is that a typo in the grid?

Can I be confident that both 70D and 80D are fully supported by BYE right now? (even if 80D SDK has not been released by Canon?)

PS: sorry for this off-topic deviation

Actually the 80D should work with 3.1.8.

Don;t worry about the DIGIC thingy, this is just informative in BYE.  I do nothing with this property.

Your issue is apparently due to a manufacturing defect in the 60D and 60Da. The fact that your camera failed after using it with BYE is coincidental. Failures have occurred with multiple software packages or with no computer connection at all.  Canon used to repair the camera at no charge. I don't know if they still do. I have never heard of this failure with models other than the 60D(a).

Here is a link to a message thread from last year from someone with the same problem

The link has extensive references.

Good luck with Canon!

I had the exact same thing happen today on my 60Da. Both camera and laptop were on battery power, so there was no possible current loop from AC power.

I have been using the camera and PC as well as laptop for several years with no problems til now.

Canon wants a basic $200 for repair, ignoring the possibility of a production fault on the series unless I can produce a copy of the 'joint statement' that used to be

on the website - that link does NOT function, just goes to the main page of this website.

Well, it looks that the problem is worldwide

It just happened to me a couple of weeks ago.

My 60D was connected to Eos Utility via USB cable, suddenly froze showing info screen on the LCD, so I switch it off. But it doesn't switch off with the power button, so I pull battery out

When trying to switch on again with new battery, different SD card and different lens, nothing happens, camera stays completely dead as if an internal fuse had blown up

I let the camera rest for a week, without batteries, just to see if that famous internal capacitor has anything to do with the failure. But no recovery, camera continues dead

I finally took it to official Canon Service Spain, they diagnose it in 5 minutes and they want 300 Euros (plus VAT) for replacing main PCB

I gave them all the info that I found in this thread about "manufacturing issue", and they say "they will study it", hahaaa (still waiting for their answer, I guesss they don't give a crap for a camera 5-years-old...)

I bought the camera in early 2011, so at least it has given me 5 years of nice use with all kinds of sofwares, including BYE, APT, Eclipse Orchestrator, etc.

(Others call it programmed or planned obsolescence.....)

I guess it's time for an upgrade to 70D or 80D, articulated screen is a must for me. Curious to explore the new wifi capabilities, too.

With the dead body, I can even play around to look for that bloody internal fuse, maybe I find it haha...

By the way, is the 80D SDK out from Canon???

Regards from Madrid!

Joaquin

This comment is perhaps irrelevant by now and if the PCBs are damaged but when my 7D won't start, I need to pull both batteries. This typically happens if the camera is still writing to the card when I either pull the external power or open the card door. Now I pay more attention to the activity light and have not had the issue in years.

This is true for most models... but the 60D(a) really does have a PCB board issue which sets it apart from any other models when it comes pour power failure.  Sad but true.

Here is the link on Ivo's website.

However, I would not send Canon the actual annoucement... this may actually not help your case.

Instead send them the indivicdual links only, there is about 10 links in that document.

I would also send them this... it indicates that in this case they had to replace the main pcb assembly.
