Is the Canon EOS 70 D any good ?

SuzanneCelino

Question

Dear all

I live in Russia and the choice of DSLR is a bit limited.

In the shop where I checked for offers were the following models.

650 D, 700 D, 70 D

and those models that my budget advisor ( my beloved wife ) would not accept : 5D, 6D and 7D.

Any advice or comment on this model ? ( in the expectation of astrophotography of course ).

Best regards to everybody !

I would suggest the 700D rather than the 70D.  You can save some $$$.  You should compare them side-by-side on the Canon web site. Most of the features that you would be giving up are not important for prime focus astrophotography.

Thank you. I ll check and make my choice, but I ll keep in mind your advice. Difference here is around 350 USD  between those two models.

If you're planning on using the DSLR almost exclusively for AstroPhotography, then almost none of the differences of the 70D matter, and the 700D is actually prized for being lighter-weight and smaller-bodied.

If you're planning on using the DSLR for Daytime Photography as well as AP, then the Advanced Features of the 70D might become More Important.  The 70D is significantly better at Auto-Focus, especially while shooting Movies.  It also has a somewhat faster Burst Shooting Speed when taking Stills, as well as better Focus Tracking - both advantages if you Photograph Sports, Kids, or Wildlife.

Both the 700D and the 70D are equally well supported with the same Feature Set within BackyardEOS.
