Serial cable for D5000

I am confused. According to previous posts I will need to connect my D5000 using a serial cable. Shoestring is mentioned as having one of these but all I see in their product listing is the cable that is used with their DSUSB adapter. Is there a serial cable that will connect my camera directly to my computer?

You need your camera USB cable no matter what to connect and control your camera.  The only thing that cable can not do is BULB so this is why you need a serial cable in addition to the camera regular usb cable.

 

For the serial cable, you need the DSUSB box plus the DSCBL-15 to connect the DSUSB to your camera.  It is up to you to decide if you need an extension depending on your setup.

 

So, you will have 2 cables connected to your camera, the regular usb cable and the DSUSB serial cable.

You need a DSUSB shutter control cable for Bulb exposures AND a USB cable for all other control functions.

Rick, are you saying that I will need the DSUSB USB Shutter Control Adapter and the DSCBL-15 Cable for Nikon DSLRs with 8-pin connector to 3.5mm male stereo plug, 3 feet plus the UC-E6 USB cable?

Thanks to Rick and Guylain for clearing up my confusion. Your explanations made it much clearer than the BYN help file.
