Uploading images, can I do it?

admin

Question

You can upload images with your posts but the size is limited to 256KB per images.

Cloud space with forum hosting is not cheap and we want to keep the cost of the forum as low as possible... why... well... because we don't want to charge you for support, ever!

Alternatively we could allow advertising on the site to offset the hosting cost but I'm here to provide support on a software you have already purchased... I don't what to flood you with ads.

We encourage you to host your images and provide a link in your post instead. AstroBin is free and provides a very cool thumbnail feature for linking images.  You can also use flickr which now provides a whooping 1GB free storage space for your images.

With everyone's cooperation we can keep the cost of this support forum low and therefor free of advertising ads and free to use for all members.

Thank you for your support and understanding.

Guylain, too bad I didn't red this before posting messages with images. Sorry about that, I'll post links to my AstroBin r Flickr account.

Don't sweat it too much Jerry.  When I get close to my paid limit I'll remove some images/Attachment in older posts and I'll start with logfiles :).  Chances are that images may very well stay a few years before I need to archive them... but the more people uses AstroBin and the likes the more longer real images will stay.

I would prefer to keep the support free and uncluttered by adverts and believe Guylain's suggestion of using 3rd party hosting sites as the sensible way forward.

Using 3rd Party Image Hosting Sites also means that the user can post at Higher and even Multiple Resolutions.  This is a Good Thing - especially with Astro Images that contain Fine Details that get Lost at Lower Resolutions.

BUT, there are a good number of BYEOS Users who have reasons to be concerned about Bandwidth Usage: Observatories at the far end of WiFi range, Observing Properties at the end of miserly basic-rate DSL lines, or using a Cellular Data Plan for connectivity.

It doesn't seem that O'Telescope BYEOS Forums will become an Image Heavy site, but...

There are a lot of Astro Imaging Newbies who are eager to improve their craft, and will seek advice and assistance wherever they find users willing to answer questions and provide suggestions.

As well, the ultimate goal of software such as BYEOS is to support the efforts of AP Imagers to capture just that - Images - which are best enjoyed when shared amongst others in the same hobby.

Perhaps it'd be nice to establish "Suggested Usage" that states something like:  Use Small Image link for the Embedded Thumbnail, and provide a Link-Only for Larger Image Resolutions.

It might even be good to provide a Sticky with examples of the proper Syntax for "]" and "[url" tags to accomplish this usage.  Or even better, coding support into the Javascript dialogs within the Text Editor tool.

We surely don't need to suggest the Admins and Moderators take on any role as "Image Police", but a softer hand at guidance and examples could benefit all...

Yes!  Astrobin is a great site specialing in astrophotos. Lots of added features concerning the equipment and processing used to produce the images.  Lots of great pics there by some of the best AP afficianados i've seen.

Besides Flickr there is Photobucket and Deviantart that do a good job also.

Hi Guylain

I am a member of a popular forum Shed and they recommend using Photobucket.com as it is free unless you choose the premium edition and all users have to do is create a Photobucket account and use the IMG link which Photobucket provides to link to their astro images. No overhead to the forum!

Worth thinking about?

BTW I have no monetary link to Photobucket!

Feel free to delete this post if you wish!
